Tim's parents were coming up for a short visit at the beginning of June. The day before their arrival was their anniversary. Being the over-ambitious achiever that I am, I decided that on top of the packing of the house, daily child care routines, and cleaning the house for my in-laws' arrival, that I would bake them a cake for their anniversary. In my severely compromised oven that bakes unevenly so one side will burn and the other side will remain close to raw. Why, oh why.
I made chocolate cake from scratch. When the cake was "finished baking" in the oven, I tried to remove the cake from the pan in order to frost it on the presentational platter of my choice (turned out to be the Hello Kitty platter). The chocolate cake refused to come out of the cake pan in one piece. Rather, it wanted to come out in large iceberg chunks and then the remaining pieces would crumble out.
And then when I tried to frost it, yes, I was basically spreading frosting around on chocolate crumbs. Evie loves cake and anything with pink frosting, so she was excited.
But to me, it was a complete and unmitigated disaster. Of course, I ran out of frosting so there was no way I could heavily frost it to hide all the mistakes. In my opinion, it looked like someone had clawed the cake.
